He plopped himself down right next to Cassian without a second thought.
Cassian’s expression darkened as he glanced at Sylas, who was grinning mischievously at his side.
Ruby, following the trend, naturally took the seat beside Faustina, making the already-nervous woman jump in surprise.
Having all these big shots suddenly crowding around her for a meal left Faustina completely on edge.
“Um, sir, miss, I can’t stay here too long. If my employer finds out, they’re bound to get suspicious.”
Gayle mustered up her courage and spoke, her nerves evident.
Ruby gave an understanding nod, her gaze drifting over to Cassian, deliberately ignoring the cup of jasmine tea he offered her.
Back at Northridge Manor, she’d always started her mornings with a cup of jasmine tea, the delicate aroma filling the entire living room. Now, she simply acted as though she hadn’t seen it.
“Here’s what we’ll do,” Ruby said warmly to Gayle. “I’ll just ask a few quick questions so you can get back soon. If you’d like to take some of the food with you, feel free to pack it up.”
Her gentle smile worked its magic, and Gayle visibly relaxed.
“All right, ask away! If I know the answer, I promise I’ll tell you everything.”
Gayle thumped her chest, determined.
“Why did the Graysons suddenly send Gennifer to approach me and try to make peace?”
Ruby wasted no time, getting straight to the point.
Gayle’s immediate response was a look of confusion.
“I’m not too sure about that, honestly. I just clean up around their apartment, and they don’t really bother keeping secrets in front of me. I did overhear them talking about some ‘big plan,’ something about the Steeles, and trying to make some money off it.”
Gayle scratched her head, her face scrunched in thought.
A big plan… making a profit… and involving the Steele family?
Ruby’s brow furrowed as she listened, her expression growing serious.
She’d suspected from the beginning that Hanley and Gennifer’s strange behavior was somehow connected to the Steeles. But what could Hanley and Gennifer possibly do to influence the Steeles?
Questions swirled endlessly in her mind, each one floating just out of reach, impossible to unravel for the moment.
She forced herself to let go of her doubts for now and turned back to Gayle for another question. “Which hospital is Gennifer in?”
That one was easy for Gayle.
“Innovate Care Center,” she answered instantly.
Ruby narrowed her eyes, mentally filing away the information.

Ruby’s eyes narrowed sharply.
She looked up at Cassian, who was as cool and distant as ever, his presence commanding and inscrutable, those dark eyes seeming to see right through everything.
No wonder he’d asked.
“Yes, she’s been pregnant for a while now. But Mr. Grayson has insisted she stay home, and most of her check-ups are done in the apartment with visiting doctors.”
Thinking of the money Ruby had given her to save her son, Gayle no longer hesitated and spilled everything she knew.
Ruby felt the tension in her shoulders finally ease as she heard the confirmation.
No wonder.
Her fingertips pressed into the papers, leaving small creases.
She hadn’t expected Violet to be pregnant.
And now, thinking back over everything Hanley had made Gennifer do in recent days…
Ruby’s gaze grew cold.
Gennifer… she was probably nothing more than a pawn, abandoned long ago.
