Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 539

Ruby instinctively touched the bracelet, the cool jade sending a slight shiver up her arm.

“Uncle, they’re divorced now. That’s a bit too personal, don’t you think?”

Sylas stepped forward, slinging an arm around Ruby’s shoulder and shooting a cheeky, challenging look at Cassian. His posture and expression were deliberately lazy and flippant, like some directionless playboy. But his eyes held a sharp glint that met Cassian’s gaze mid-air, a silent, crackling battle of wills.

Ruby could feel the palpable tension between them.

“Let’s go,” she said, shooting Sylas a glare as she pulled him away with her.

Cassian stood up, about to ask another question to make her stay, but the sight of her hand intertwined with Sylas’s made the words catch in his throat. He couldn’t ask anything.

It seemed… he no longer even had the right to ask her to stay.

Bennett watched as his boss, who had just been showing a flicker of emotion, suddenly stood frozen, all the life draining out of him. A wave of dejection and sorrow washed over Cassian.

“Mr. Veyne, is there something special about that bracelet?” Bennett asked quickly, trying to break the heavy silence and pull Cassian back from his despair.

Cassian’s eyes were downcast, his long, thick lashes obscuring most of his pupils, leaving only pools of blackness.

After a long moment, he looked up, his eyes vacant but tinged with a flicker of panic.

“That’s the Steele family heirloom. It’s only given to the heir.”

If Ruby became the heir to the Steele family, she would surely have to go with them to the Capital. The Capital was a world away, and knowing Ruby’s personality, she would likely never return to Quinborough. If he went to the Capital to see her, he wouldn’t even have a decent excuse.

Seeing the desolate look on Cassian’s face, Bennett guessed the source of his worry.

“Mr. Veyne, the Madam is still fixated on getting revenge against the Graysons and Violet. She’ll definitely stay in Quinborough for the time being,” Bennett offered, though his words of comfort felt hollow.

A flicker of life returned to Cassian’s eyes, as if he’d actually heard him.

He clenched his fists.

Right. There was still time. He still had a chance.

“The company surveillance footage I asked you to recover from a year ago—any results yet?” Cassian asked, turning to Bennett. The gloom vanished, replaced by the decisive, authoritative air of Mr. Veyne.

“The specialists said the company’s surveillance equipment and some internal systems were tampered with. The tech department is investigating. As for the footage, they said it should all be restored within a few days,” Bennett reported, standing straight and resuming his professional demeanor.

Cassian nodded. “As soon as possible.”

“And what about that man I asked you to look into?” Cassian asked as he strode away, not bothering to look back.
