Fanny scoffed inwardly, took note of the room number, and slipped away undetected.

As she stepped out of Gennifer’s ward and into the elevator, she ran right into Hayley, who was on her way to meet her in the lobby.

“How’d it go?” Hayley asked, glancing instinctively toward the ward. “Did you find Gennifer’s room?”

“Found it. What about Gayle?”

At Fanny’s question, Hayley casually waved her phone. “Got it all on camera. Let’s go. Gayle should be heading back to the apartment soon.”

They didn’t linger, quickly getting into the car together. Once they were settled, they called Ruby.

“We followed Gayle, and we have an unexpected bonus for you.”

Hearing Hayley’s excited voice, Ruby carefully fed Mira another spoonful of baby cereal, playing along. “A bonus? Did you find Gennifer?”

“How did you know?!” Hayley exclaimed in shock.

Ruby’s soft chuckle came through the phone. It was only logical. They had gone to the hospital, and while she didn’t know Gennifer’s exact room, she knew she was recovering at Apex Health Institute.

“You saw Frieda visiting her, didn’t you?” Ruby asked, her tone calm and confident.

Hayley’s mouth fell open in an exaggerated gasp.

Fanny couldn’t help but laugh at her expression before taking the phone. “Gennifer is in the inpatient ward on the fifth floor, private room number 8.”

“And Gayle’s son is on the seventh floor, in a three-person room, number 45,” Hayley added.

Ruby set down the cereal bowl, wiped Mira’s mouth with a tissue, and replied, “Did you find out anything else?”

Fanny and Hayley exchanged a look.

Hayley spoke first. “Based on what you got from Gayle, Hanley is playing the role of her savior. Her son was seriously injured and in desperate need of treatment when Hanley swooped in, promising to use his connections to get the boy into Apex.”
