Frieda walked over and took Gennifer’s hand. “Of course. If I hadn’t been stuck at the villa all day meeting with Ruby, I would have been here taking care of my Gennifer.”

A strange light flashed in Gennifer’s eyes. She tugged on Frieda’s sleeve. “Mom, did my sister agree to come home?”

At the question, Frieda stiffened, her face clouding over with displeasure at the mention of Ruby. “Yes.”

She looked down, straightening the corners of Gennifer’s blanket. “Your father said she’s still a daughter of the Grayson family. Also, he’s agreed to handle that clarification she promised the media, so she won’t have to make a public appearance.” Her tone was flat and cold, as if she were discussing a complete stranger. The only emotion that came through was her distaste.

Gennifer noticed Frieda’s reaction and quickly forced a smile to ease the tension. “Mom, that’s only right. But… you shouldn’t be so upset just from seeing my sister. Did she do something to hurt you again?” she asked, her eyes wide with concern.

Met with such a caring gaze, Frieda’s bitterness came pouring out.

“The Steele family sent representatives—from my mother’s side! But they all sided with Ruby, a person they just met! They even gave her the bracelet that belongs to the Steele family heir!” Frieda was seething, her eyes bloodshot with rage.

“What?”

Gennifer, who had been relatively calm, suddenly tensed, her gaze sharpening.

“The bracelet that belongs to the Steele family heir? Mom, are you sure you saw that right? Why would the Steele family give something so precious to Ruby?” she asked, her voice laced with disbelief and resentment.

Why?! How could Ruby, someone who had no connection to the Steeles, become their heir after just one meeting?

“How should I know?! I think my aunt and uncle have lost their minds! Giving away that much power so casually!” Frieda was fuming, so overcome with rage that she started coughing violently.

Gennifer sat frozen on the bed, unable to even think. She stared blankly ahead, not even looking at Frieda, who was coughing so hard she looked like she might pass out.

“Mom, you knew what that bracelet meant. Didn’t you try to stop them?” she demanded, grabbing Frieda’s arm.

Frieda gritted her teeth. “Of course I did! But your father stopped me!”

The mention of Hanley brought a sliver of clarity back to Gennifer’s jealousy-clouded mind.

She gripped the blanket tightly.

Dad must have stopped her because if Ruby inherited the Steele family fortune, he, as her biological father, would stand to gain even more.
