Violet’s petulant voice crackled through the phone.

Hanley quickly covered the receiver and glanced around nervously. Seeing no one nearby, he lowered his voice. “I’ve been busy lately. It’s not like I want to be here. The Steele family is in town now. I have to keep up appearances, don’t I?”

He sounded genuinely put-upon, as if staying with his family was a form of torture.

His words seemed to placate Violet, and her mood improved slightly. She casually tossed a fruit pit onto the floor, right where Gayle had just finished mopping.

Gayle froze.

“What are you looking at? Clean it up!” Violet snapped before propping her feet up and resuming her conversation with Hanley in a leisurely tone.

Gayle lowered her head, letting her heavy bangs obscure her face. The only sign of her fury was the white-knuckled grip she had on the mop handle. She silently cleaned the spot again.

Violet watched her with a disdainful smirk before cooing into the phone, “So when are you coming back? The baby and I miss you.” She stroked her belly, her every movement a picture of delicate charm.

“Besides, I’m getting further along in my pregnancy. I can’t just sit at home waiting for a doctor to do basic checkups, can I?” Violet pouted.

Hanley understood her implication and frowned. The silence on his end annoyed Violet. “Say something! You had Gennifer talk to the media for Ruby’s sake, right? So they shouldn’t be watching us anymore. Keeping me cooped up in this apartment all the time is going to make me sick.”

She let out a delicate huff.

Hanley rubbed his temples, a headache forming. “Violet, it’s not that simple. It’s not just the media we have to worry about. There are other people watching us.”

“I don’t care! It’s been so long. You even held a funeral for me. Who else do we need to be careful of?” Violet’s hormones made her feel increasingly irritable and entitled, and she leaned into her petulance.

Hanley sighed in frustration. “Fine. Just a few more days. I’ll come back and take you for a checkup myself.”

That seemed to satisfy her for the moment. She shifted in her seat, then suddenly sat up straight. “I heard Gennifer is still in the hospital with serious injuries. I can’t visit, so you, as her father, should at least go and see her.”
