Ruby watched him eat it, then nodded with a satisfied smile.
As the chili hit Sylas’s stomach, a fire ignited within him. But meeting Ruby’s gaze, he forced a casual expression. “Wow, looks like my cooking is pretty good.”
Seeing that the two had “reconciled,” Pamela finally seemed content.
With her mind occupied by the Grayson and Steele family matters, Ruby had no energy to continue bickering with Sylas. Though she had a small appetite, she made a point to taste a bit of every dish, acknowledging the effort he had put in.
Sylas, however, who was usually a fast eater, was now picking at his food slowly.
When Ruby finished and put down her bowl, she noticed his flushed cheeks and frowned. “What’s wrong with you?”
A sharp pain twisted in his stomach. Hearing her question, he quickly looked up and forced a natural smile. “I’m fine. I just cooked this myself, so I have to savor every bite.”
Ruby studied him for a moment longer, her gaze lingering on the curve of his smile. Seeing nothing else out of the ordinary, she let it go. “Take your time.”
With that, she stood up and headed for the study. Just before she left the room, she glanced back at the table. “It was delicious.”
Sylas paused, stunned. By the time he looked up again, Ruby was already gone. Her words seemed to linger in the air. He blinked, and this time, a genuine, unbidden smile spread across his face.
The next second, another wave of excruciating pain seized him.
He pushed his plate away. “Pamela, could you please clean up? I’m full.”
Without waiting for a response, he stood and strode out of the room.
