He shot her the same disdainful look his mother had. “Country bumpkin. All you do is make my mom angry.”
Gayle clenched her jaw tighter, her head bowed so low that her face was completely hidden. The resentment in her eyes was a burning fire.
Ulysses strutted back into his room, triumphant.
After she finished cleaning, Gayle fled the suffocating apartment. Standing outside, she stared at the closed door and the room number, her body trembling with hatred.
They treated her like an animal, a beast of burden to be ordered around at will. In their presence, she was stripped of even the most basic human dignity.
“Hey, I haven’t seen Gennifer in a while.”
Suddenly, the cheerful voice of an elderly woman sounded from behind her.
Gayle quickly lowered her head, pretending she had just stepped out to take out the trash.
“Look, isn’t that Gennifer’s apartment? I don’t recognize the woman who just left.”
“You’re right. I hope nothing’s wrong with Gennifer. We should go check on her!”

At the hotel.
The old master sat in a plush armchair, watching his wife pace back and forth in front of him.
“You’re not getting any younger. You should rest,” he teased with a gentle laugh.
His wife stopped, shot him a glare, and then resumed her pacing.
“You don’t seem worried at all. That Gennifer girl has been bullying Ruby, and as her grandmother, I’m not going to let it slide. Now that I’m finally in Quinborough, I have to set things right.” As she spoke, she raised a clenched fist, her expression fierce and determined.
