Seeing the conflicted look on her face, the driver wisely fell silent and focused on the road.
“A very important friend,” she finally said, her voice raspy.
The driver nodded thoughtfully, then slammed on the brakes. “We’re here!”
Before he had even finished speaking, she pushed the door open and rushed out.
When Ruby arrived at the location Bennett had sent, she found a group of people standing outside a room with the words “Operating Room” lit up above the door.
“Why is he in surgery?” she asked, her face pale with panic as she turned to Bennett.
Bennett looked troubled, but a medical staff member waiting nearby spoke first. “It’s acute gastritis. Mr. Cunningham can’t eat spicy food. It seems he accidentally ingested some today, which triggered a severe reaction.”
Ruby swayed on her feet, a wave of guilt washing over her.
“M-Miss Ruby, it’s not a major issue. Mr. Cunningham will be fine once he’s out,” Bennett quickly reassured her.
The next moment, he felt a burning, hostile gaze on his back. He shrank back, crossing his arms and retreating to a corner.
Cassian, who had been ignored since Ruby’s arrival, stared at her, his eyes dark and intense. “Are you that worried about him?”
His voice was low and gravelly, cutting through the quiet of the hallway.
Ruby’s back stiffened for a moment before she relaxed. She had seen Cassian the moment she arrived. It was impossible to miss him—he was tall, imposing, and exuded an aura of cold authority.
“Of course,” she replied, her own expression turning cold, her voice firm.
The air in the hallway seemed to drop several degrees.
Cassian stared at her, but she refused to meet his gaze. He thought of the frantic worry on her face when she had rushed in, the urgency in her voice—all for the man in that operating room. Her ex-husband, on the other hand, was completely forgotten, not even worthy of a single glance.
“Is Sylas that important to you?” he asked, his voice laced with a jealousy he couldn’t hide.
His question finally made her look at him, her expression quizzical.
