On the twenty–seventh day of her captivity, Sophia learned to be obedient. She stopped fighting, stopped her hunger strikes, and even offered Vincent a faint smile from time to time. Vincent was wary at first, but gradually, he began to believe she had resigned herself to her fate.

Below were raging waves, but on the cliff face were footholds she had scouted out days ago. The guards didn’t dare to follow. Soaked to the bone, Sophia and Alexander struggled onto a small, hidden shore.
“Let’s go!” Alexander pulled her toward a waiting speedboat. Just then, a blinding spotlight hit them.
