Lena froze, her mouth opening as if to speak, but not a single word would come out.
It was a long moment before she finally managed, “Fine. Go, then!”
—
Afternoon. The airport.
Charlotte had flown in just to see Ryan receive his music award. Now that everything was over, she felt no reason to linger and headed straight for her gate.
She boarded, expecting a quiet flight, only to spot two all-too-familiar faces in business class—Darren and Noah.
Her brows knit in confusion. What are they doing here?
Still, she kept her composure and took her seat.
Darren handed her an eye mask. “Charlotte, I figured you’d be in a rush and forget yours, so I brought it along from home.”
“Thank you,” she replied, taking it from him. She noticed him form a heart with his fingers as he passed it over.
She cleared her throat. Nearly forty, and he’s regressing—acting more like a kid every year.
Ironically, the real child, Noah, sat upright and proper, sneaking glances at her every so often.
After he’d done it for the tenth time, Charlotte finally asked, her voice cool and even, “Is there something you want to say to me?”
Noah instantly tensed up. He took a deep breath, gathering his courage. “Mom, from now on, I’m staying in Heston. I’m not living with Lena anymore!”
He almost complained about Lena being too strict, never understanding him, but Darren’s earlier words echoed in his mind.
This isn’t about Lena. This is my choice, my responsibility…
So he swallowed his complaints and said nothing more.
Charlotte listened, then turned to Darren, her gaze clearly questioning: “Our arrangement is strictly business—independent, no interference. Now you’re bringing Noah into the mix? What’s that supposed to mean?”
Darren jumped in at once. “Noah’s custody is with me. When we’re back, I’ll be changing up my work schedule—at least half my time will go to raising him myself. Of course, you’ll have full visitation rights, and you’re part of his life whenever you want to be. I’ll respect whatever you decide.”
