A wave of sadness washed over Emmy as she rested her head on his back, her voice barely above a whisper. “If I’d known you were in Special Forces, I never would’ve rushed into this marriage. I wouldn’t have dragged you down with me.”
Someone as good as him didn’t deserve to be weighed down by someone as messy as her.
James let out a soft, low laugh.
He didn’t say anything else, just carried her quietly all the way up to her apartment.
At the elevator, James set her down gently.
She kept her head lowered, looking so adorably lost that he couldn’t resist. He reached out and gave her nose a playful little flick.
“Alright, I forgive you,” he said, his voice warm and easy. “It’s late. Get some rest, okay? I have to head back to the station.”
Emmy stood there frozen, her hand pressed to her nose where he’d touched her.
Just like that… he forgave her?
She stared in a daze as he opened his umbrella and walked out into the rain.
His tall, steady figure faded into the downpour, upright and unshakable, like a pine tree that would never bend.
Suddenly, her eyes burned with tears.
A wave of guilt, stronger than anything she’d ever felt, crashed over her.
He probably thought her biggest mistake was accidentally drinking something she shouldn’t have.
He had no idea she’d kissed another man.
If he knew the truth, there was no way… no way he would forgive her so easily.

The next day, Forward Technology officially moved to its new office.
Calling it a move was generous—it was more like starting over from scratch.
The fire had destroyed everything. There was nothing left.
Now, sunlight streamed through spotless windows in the new space as Aidan directed the movers, making sure the new servers, desks, and chairs got set up.
To save on moving costs, everyone from the company came to help.
