“Sir,” James said, his tone easy but with a weight behind it that made everyone sit up a little straighter. “You really working this hard to mess with me and my wife? What’s the deal, you jealous or something?”
“Jealous of you?” Dean let out a sharp laugh, eyeing James from head to toe like he was nothing special. “Don’t think just because you’re wearing a suit that costs more than my car you’re one of us. Has she even told you? I’m her ex.”
He leaned in, voice dripping with smugness. “She used to chase after me everywhere. She spent six months planning a wedding just to surprise me. The amount of money she spent on me? You couldn’t even dream of it.”
“If her family hadn’t messed things up, she’d already be Mrs. Sparrow.”
“Shut up!” Emmy’s voice rang out, raw and furious.
Her eyes were bright with tears, but the way she glared at Dean was enough to make him flinch. He frowned, confused, like he genuinely didn’t get what he’d done wrong.
In another life, she’d nearly ruined herself to give him a child. She’d loved him enough to throw everything away. Shouldn’t this new guy know just how much she’d given up? Wasn’t he just some stand-in, anyway—a way to get back at Dean?
Emmy clenched her fists and stared Dean down. “Dean, I hate you.”
She couldn’t take it anymore. She shot up from her chair, stormed around the table, and grabbed James’ arm. “Come on. Let’s get out of here. We’ll eat somewhere else.”
But before she could move, a strong hand caught her wrist. The next thing she knew, everything spun.
James pulled her straight into his lap, settling her firmly on his thigh. She stared at him, wide-eyed and stunned.
Dean’s face went pale. He lurched forward, but James didn’t even spare him a glance. Instead, he gently wiped away the tears on Emmy’s cheek.
Finally, James looked up, meeting Dean’s eyes with a calm, steady look that said he had everything under control. “Mr. Sparrow, thanks for tossing away a diamond because you thought it was just a piece of glass.”
