The relatives’ faces just kept getting darker, each one looking more annoyed than the last.
Tim couldn’t take it anymore. He jumped up and pointed right at Emmy. “What’s your deal, Emmy? You think we’re desperate to stay here? It was your dad who begged us!”
“Oh?” Emmy said, her voice light and sharp. “Wow, you must be really something. The CEO of Starlight Corporation needed to be begged to stay in our tiny villa? Didn’t know you were that important.”
Her words hit Tim hard. His face went from red to white, and he looked like he might explode.
A couple of other relatives, already feeling awkward, got even more uncomfortable. One of her cousins stood up, voice all bluster. “Fine! We’ll leave! Who wants to stay in this cold, heartless place anyway?”
“Exactly! I’m packing my stuff right now!”
In no time, most of the people in the dining room stomped off upstairs, clearly in a huff.
Brooks walked over to Evelina. “Ms. White, this way please.”
Evelina didn’t move right away. Her eyes lingered on James’s handsome face, and for a second, she looked like she was wrestling with herself.
But then she turned to Emmy. “Emmy, Dean’s in the hospital. If you have time, you should go see him.”
Emmy shot a glance at the man next to her, just out of habit.
As expected, James’s easygoing look vanished. He looked stone-cold.
Emmy turned back, glaring at Evelina. “You want me to go visit your boyfriend in the hospital? Are you seriously out of your mind?”
Evelina bit her lip. “It was Dean who asked me to tell you. I’ve said what I needed to. Whether you go or not is your business.”
With that, she spun around and followed Brooks out.
Annoyance and disgust flickered in Emmy’s eyes.
What a joke.
She’d already gotten Dean’s message the day before. After James punched him, Dean called an ambulance for himself, then texted her whining about having tinnitus and a concussion, blaming her for everything. He insisted she owed him an explanation and demanded she come to the hospital.
She deleted the whole conversation without replying.
And now here was Evelina, not even taking care of her own boyfriend, but running over to stir up drama instead.
