Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 15

The weekend came and went in a blur.

Emmy’s inheritance paperwork was still stuck in limbo, no progress in sight.

But there was one piece of news making the rounds. Dean and Evelina hadn’t actually gone through with their wedding. That extravagant ceremony, the one that cost millions, was just... canceled. Gone, as if it never even happened.

For a moment, Emmy was genuinely surprised. But it didn’t take her long to figure it out.

Dean loved Evelina too much to let her settle for a recycled wedding, especially one that was supposed to be for someone else. He’d want to give her something bigger, something special, just for the two of them. There was no way he’d let Evelina feel second best.

Monday morning.

A message from James popped up on Emmy’s phone.

James: [Family social at the station this weekend. Wanna come?]

Instead of texting back, Emmy just called him.

He picked up right away, his side of the line noisy with background chatter.

“Mr. Nelson, I got your message,” Emmy said.

“Yeah.” His voice was calm as usual.

“I’m a bit swamped this week. If it’s not something I absolutely have to attend, I’ll have to skip it.”

James was quiet for a few seconds.

“Got it,” he said, his tone unreadable. “Take care.”

“You too.”

Emmy hung up, setting her phone down, and couldn’t help but smile a little. It was just easier dealing with someone who weren’t fussy.

Over at South Bay Fire Station, the breakfast room was buzzing. A bunch of firefighters, still sweaty from their morning run, crowded around James, who was usually all business and barely ever cracked a smile.

“Captain, your wife’s coming to the family social this weekend, right?”

“Yeah, you’ve got to introduce her! We’re dying to meet her!”

“Was that her just now? Did she say she’d come?”

She’d just hung up with James when her lawyer called.

“Ms. Lincoln, there’s a snag with your inheritance. Starlight Corporation is holding up the paperwork.”

Emmy’s brows knitted. “Why?”

“Their legal team says you haven’t contributed to the company’s revenue in the last six months. HR marked you as having resigned, and they’re saying you’re not eligible to inherit anything.”

Emmy almost laughed—she was that angry.

She’d stepped down from her tech director role six months ago to plan her wedding and finish her thesis, only keeping a token deputy title.

The ridiculous part? All the tech department’s biggest, most profitable projects right now were ones she’d led and finished before stepping back.

And now, just because she hadn’t brought in ‘recent’ results, they wanted to wipe out everything she’d done?

Trying to keep her cool, Emmy grabbed her keys and headed straight to Starlight Corporation’s headquarters.

But as soon as the elevator doors opened, she stopped short, surprised by what she saw.
