James walked in, tall and sharp in an all-black shirt and slacks, looking every bit the man who meant business.
His grandma didn’t even look at him. She craned her neck, searching the space behind him for someone else—someone who wasn’t there.
Her face fell. She shot him a glare. “Where’s my granddaughter-in-law? Didn’t you say you’d bring her today?”
James’s eyes clouded over.
He really had planned to bring her. He wanted her to meet Jamie, wanted to tell Jamie he’d finally settled down. But every time he remembered she might still have feelings for someone else, he just couldn’t do it. He wasn’t about to introduce her to the person who meant the most to him, not when her heart wasn’t truly his.
“She’s busy,” he said, keeping his voice calm and distant. “She couldn’t come.”
“Don’t give me that nonsense!”
Before he could react, Grandma snatched up her mahogany cane and gave him a good whack.
“You think I don’t know you? I bet you backed out at the last minute again and left that poor girl behind!”
James stood there, back straight, taking it without a word.
She kept going, out of breath but still fiery. “What, are you waiting for me to die before you finally bring her to meet me?”
He pressed his lips into a tight line, voice steady. “Grandma, you’ll live to be a hundred.”
She scoffed. “Oh, don’t flatter me! You’ll be the end of me, you stubborn boy. That poor girl must’ve had the worst luck to end up with someone like you!”
James turned to the nurse standing nearby. “Help Grandma to the car. We should get going.”
“I’m not leaving!” Grandma turned away, digging in her heels like a child. “I’m waiting for someone!”
“I want to see that Emmy girl! She’s smart and sweet—I really like her! I ought to introduce her to Jamie. She’d make a perfect wife for him!”
