Emmy’s face was so red, you’d think she might actually start sizzling.
He stood there just staring at her, eyes dark and intense, like he was trying to read every thought on her face. He didn’t say a word for what felt like forever. Then, just as she was about to squirm out of her own skin, he finally spoke—two words, slow and deliberate. “She’s nice.”
Before Emmy could even process that, he shoved a warm lunchbox into her arms and walked off without looking back.
She just stood there, totally thrown.
She? Who the heck is she?
Emmy was fuming. She wanted nothing more than to chuck that lunchbox straight at his back. Instead, she clenched her jaw, marched back to her office, and slammed the door so hard the whole hallway probably shook.
Outside, the gossip mill spun up in seconds.
“What happened? Why does Ms. Lincoln look so pissed?”
“Did you see her lips? They look kinda swollen.”
“Wait, did someone kiss her? That must’ve been something.”
“She doesn’t look mad, she looks embarrassed.”
“Did you notice the lunchbox? Was that her mysterious husband who brought it?”
“Oh my god, he came all the way here in this storm just to deliver lunch? That’s some serious boyfriend points.”
Meanwhile, Emmy just glared at the lunchbox on her desk. She was so mad she couldn’t even think about eating.
She grabbed her phone and dialed Abriella. The second the call connected, she went straight for the kill.
“Tell me everything about your cousin’s love life. Start to finish. How many girlfriends has he had?”
Abriella was completely blindsided.
“What? My cousin? Girlfriends?”
She sounded like Emmy had just started speaking in code.
“Emmy, did you nap too hard or something? My cousin has been single for twenty-eight years. He’s basically a monk. There are no ex-girlfriends.”
Emmy shot right back.
“No way!”
How could a guy like him never have dated?
He was so thoughtful without even trying. And those kisses…
Each one left her breathless, her guard totally gone.
Just thinking about how demanding and confident he was when he kissed her made her cheeks burn all over again.
