Lorelei waved a hand, calling a nurse over without much ceremony.
“The patient’s family needs to rest. Is the room ready yet?”
The nurse nodded quickly. “All set, Dr. Hall. VIP room 903 on the ninth floor.”
Lorelei gave a small nod, her chin lifting toward the girl in James’s arms. “Take this young lady downstairs first.”
But before the nurse could even move, James was already carrying Emmy toward the elevator, his stride brisk and steady.
Lorelei blinked, a little caught off guard. She shoved her hands in her pockets and followed, calling after him, “You haven’t changed at all since the army—still cold as ever.”
She glanced at Emmy, who was limp in James’s arms. “This girl can barely make it through one rough night. She’s not built for your kind of tough love.”
James’s answer was flat, almost indifferent. “I know what I’m doing. You don’t need to remind me.”
He paused for a second, then added quietly, “Thanks for tonight.”
Lorelei actually laughed. “A thank you from you? That’s rare. Makes staying up all night worth it.”
James looked over. “She doesn’t know who I really am. Please don’t say anything.”
Lorelei arched a brow, understanding. “Yeah, I figured. She seems a little fragile—if she found out, she’d probably have a meltdown.”
The elevator chimed and the doors slid open.
James carried Emmy into the room and set her down gently on the big bed. He knelt, untied her shoes, slipped off her heels, then tucked the blanket around her.
Lorelei leaned in the doorway, watching the whole thing, her usually cool eyes flickering with something complicated.
“Never thought I’d see the day—James, the ice king, actually being gentle with a woman.”
She gave him a look. “Don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen for her?”
James didn’t look away from Emmy’s peaceful face. “I’m her husband. It’s my responsibility.”
