“Let’s take a break for a couple of hours,” James said. “Then meet me downstairs at the park.”
Two hours later, they found a quiet spot in the small park outside the hospital.
“Warm up first,” James told her. “Trust me, you don’t want to pull anything.”
He slid easily into a textbook-perfect lunge, his muscles flexing under his sweatpants.
“Like this. Keep your core tight.”
Emmy did her best to copy him, but her body was out of shape. She wobbled, struggling to keep her balance.
James came over in a few long strides. He put one big hand on her lower back, the other gently pressing her knee down.
“Straighten your back,” he said, voice low. “Lower your leg a bit more. You should feel the stretch in your inner thigh.”
He was so close his chest nearly brushed her back, his breath warm against her ear as he spoke.
But all Emmy could think about was getting stronger.
She ignored the soreness in her muscles and did exactly what he said.
James, on the other hand, was distracted. From where he stood, he couldn’t help noticing the curve of her hips as she leaned forward, the way her slim waist fit right into his palm. The tank top she wore stretched across her chest as she breathed, tracing out a shape that was both innocent and tempting.
He swallowed hard, a thin line of sweat breaking out along his hairline.
When Emmy finally finished the set, she braced herself on her knees, panting for air. Looking up, she saw beads of sweat on James’s forehead.
“It’s pretty cool out tonight,” she said, a little confused. “How come you’re sweating so much?”
James’s eyes flickered away. His voice sounded rougher than usual. “Do two more sets by yourself. I’m gonna go wash my face.”
Emmy didn’t think much of it, but she glanced down at her fitted top before starting her next set.
Soon, James came back, his face still damp, his eyes carefully avoiding hers.
“I’ll run two laps with you,” he said.
“Alright.”
James slowed his pace to almost a walk, but Emmy could barely make it halfway around the park before she was gasping, legs heavy and shaky.
Still, she gritted her teeth and forced herself to keep up, doing everything she could to not fall behind.
