Emmy raised an eyebrow.
Could he be any more impatient?
“Mom, just give it to him. I don’t need it anymore.”
Her dad’s little games were so obvious. If she still couldn’t see through them after two lifetimes, she might as well have lived for nothing.
If he found out she’d already married a firefighter, he’d do everything in his power to make Mr. Nelson’s life hell. But once the shareholders’ meeting was over and everything was settled, it would be too late for him to mess things up.
Emmy made her way to the tech department to grab a few important things.
As she stepped out of the elevator, another elevator across the hall dinged open. Out stepped a tall, sharp-featured man holding a thermal lunchbox.
She pretended not to notice and kept walking.
“Emmy.” His voice was deep, flat as ever.
With a few long strides, he got in front of her, blocking her way.
She stopped and frowned. “What do you want?”
“Did you remotely wipe the model’s chip yesterday?” Dean looked at her, a little helpless, a wry smile on his lips. “You didn’t have to prove a point.”
Emmy smiled, but it was icy. “It was mine to begin with. I’ll do whatever I want with it.”
Dean frowned. “Evelina really liked that model. I didn’t think you’d be this petty.”
“Oh? You re-gifted it to your new girlfriend and thought you were being all mature and thoughtful? Or is it that you can’t even be bothered to pick out a gift for your sweetheart yourself anymore?”
The air instantly went cold.
Dean stared at her, something complicated in his eyes, then finally said in a low voice, “Eve almost died in that fire. We both owe her. Can’t you just… try to get along with her?”
Emmy almost laughed out loud.
She couldn’t stop the sarcasm from dripping out.
“Go chase your true love, I won’t stand in your way. But please, do me one last favor—stay out of my life. I don’t ever want to see you again.”
Dean’s face went dark, his eyes fixed on her. “Do you mean that?”
Emmy didn’t even bother to look at him. She turned and walked away.
At this point, did it even matter?
“Ms. Lincoln! Ms. Lincoln!”
A young tech employee came running up, out of breath.
“The Dome’s data is still freaking out! Every minute the system’s down, the company’s losing hundreds of thousands! Rory needs you, now!”
Emmy kept moving. “Alright, I’m on my way.”
Dean followed close behind.
