After leaving Nelson Tower, Emmy sat in her car, still half convinced the past two days were just some wild dream.
She’d actually done it. She got the shares. She saved Starlight Corporation.
It all felt a little too lucky, like someone was secretly pulling strings for her. And if there was someone behind it, she could only think of one person—Mr. Nelson.
But why would he help her? All because of those three stupid coincidences? Was that really enough for him to go out on a limb for her like this?
Last time they met in the hospital elevator, he’d basically called her reckless to her face. So what had changed?
Emmy chased the thoughts away and forced herself back into work mode. She called the top execs at Starlight and told them the board would meet next Monday.
After that, she headed straight for the hospital.
Today happened to be Dr. Lorelei’s day for consultations. Emmy checked on her mom, got the latest update, and was about to leave when Dr. Lorelei’s eyes landed on her neck—right on the faint, telltale red mark.
Lorelei raised an eyebrow, trying to sound casual. “Things are good between you and your husband, huh?”
Emmy didn’t think much of it and nodded. “Yeah. We’re really close.”
Lorelei didn’t say anything else. She just gave Emmy a long look, then headed back into her office.
Emmy changed into the sterile gown and went into the ICU. She sat by her mom’s bed, gently holding her hand—the one with the IV.
“Mom, I got the Starlight shares,” she whispered, her voice shaky. “Please wake up soon, okay?”
She tried so hard not to cry, but her voice caught anyway.
When visiting hours ended, Emmy left the room and nearly walked straight into Dean, who was standing in the hallway in a hospital gown.
She kept her head up and tried to walk right past him, but Dean grabbed her wrist.
“What’s that on your neck?” His voice was cold, icy.
