James reached into his pocket and pulled out a man’s ring. It matched the one on her finger, just a bit wider and heavier. He took his time, sliding it onto his own hand.

“I bought these yesterday. Was going to give you yours last night, but you looked so miserable about it, I couldn’t be bothered,” he said.

Emmy couldn’t help but roll her eyes. So he knew she didn’t want him moving in? Then why did he do it anyway? She kept her thoughts to herself and just stared down at the ring on her hand. Simple, elegant, totally her vibe.

“I really like it,” she said softly.

“I transferred the dowry to your card. Grab it whenever you have time.” James added, “Our new place is being renovated. I’ll take you to see it soon.”

He looked at her, steady and serious. “Other than not being able to give you a wedding, is there anything else you want?”

Emmy was caught off guard. “How did you—”

“If you’re the one, I’m not leaving any regrets behind,” he said, like it was the most obvious thing ever. Then he seemed to remember something. “Your cousins said you’re still missing a car? Let me know when you’re free, I’ll take you to pick one out.”

Emmy finally snapped. “Do you just have endless money or what? I really don’t need all this.”

He was a firefighter. Where was this coming from?

“My salary isn’t huge, but it’s enough for us.” James said it so matter-of-factly. “If you don’t want any of it, the money can just sit in your account.”

Out of nowhere, he reached out his hand. “Oh, give me your phone.”

Emmy instinctively tightened her grip, suspicious. “Why?”

James didn’t wait for her permission—he just leaned over, took the phone right out of her hand. “Passcode?”

She pressed her lips together and said nothing.

He barely hesitated—his fingers flew over the screen and it unlocked anyway.

Emmy’s eyes went wide. She reached out to snatch it back, but James had already seen the three missed calls from “Dean” on her screen.
