Evelina’s face went stiff. She bit down on her lower lip, trying to hide how rattled she was.
Dean’s eyes only grew darker, never leaving Emmy for a second.
Emmy spoke up, her voice steady and calm. “Of course I don’t want to watch all my hard work go up in smoke.”
Without another word, she walked straight to the central control console.
The technicians around her seemed to part instinctively, moving aside as if they could feel her determination.
Emmy’s slim fingers flew over the keyboard, strings of complicated code spilling across the screen like a waterfall.
She was completely in the zone, focused and unflinching, as if the whole world had faded away and it was just her and the machine.
The techs who’d been panicking just moments before now held their breath. All eyes were on her.
Evelina watched Emmy’s smooth, confident movements and dug her nails into her own palm, unable to look away.
Dean couldn’t stop watching Emmy either. He found himself barely breathing.
He’d never seen her like this before.
The Emmy he remembered was always bright and full of life, her gaze following him like a sunflower turning toward the sun.
He’d once told her he didn’t like women who were too focused on their careers. After they got married, she gave up her job. She said she wanted to build a home for them, maybe have a child just as outstanding as he was.
He knew she liked playing around with code, but she never let herself get lost in it when he was there.
He’d never realized that the same hands that used to bring him coffee and pick out his ties could move so fast, commanding the keyboard like she was born for it.
This Emmy felt so unfamiliar, it made his heart race.
Suddenly, a soft hand slipped around his arm.
He turned automatically.
The whole IT department erupted in a wave of muffled cheers.
Emmy stopped, finally letting out a quiet breath.
She stood and turned to the director. “Rory, I’ll organize the follow-up maintenance and data backups and send them to you.”
Rory sighed, regret written all over his face. “Mr. Lincoln… I think he really made a mistake this time.”
A small, almost teasing smile tugged at Emmy’s lips. “Don’t worry. This isn’t over. I’ll be back.”
Some debts still needed to be settled. Some things needed to go back to where they belonged.
Rory blinked, then nodded, understanding in his eyes.
Emmy didn’t say another word. She turned and walked out. She didn’t even glance at the two people clinging to each other behind her.
Dean watched her leave, that heavy feeling in his chest only growing, making it hard to even catch his breath.
