Emmy met his eyes and nodded, totally calm.
“I used to be obsessed with video games. I know the industry inside and out.”
She paused and tapped her fingers on the edge of her laptop. “If these bugs don’t get fixed, Letter from the Other Side won’t just flop—it’ll disappear without a sound.”
Jamie’s eyes narrowed, something dark flickering behind them. He was suspicious now.
A beta tester had found more fatal bugs than his entire top-tier dev team? That didn’t add up.
Obviously, pushing for an early release meant his people had cut corners. But his grandma couldn’t wait—the game had to launch next month, no matter what. Emmy’s report of these bugs felt like a lifeline.
Jamie squinted at her and finally asked, “Why come to me directly? Why not the company?”
Emmy’s hands clenched tight. “Honestly, James, my mom’s in the hospital. The bills are insane. I need cash—fast. If I go through the company, I’ll be waiting a month or more. I can’t afford to wait.”
“But I know you’re straightforward. You’ll pay me right away.”
After a few meetings, she’d realized he wasn’t nearly as scary as the rumors said. Actually, he’d helped her more than once. She wasn’t the type to forget a favor.
James frowned even deeper.
If she was so smart, why not just use the company card he’d already given her if she needed money?
But if she was clueless, how’d she singlehandedly find bugs his whole team missed?
He honestly didn’t know what to make of her.
In the end, he just nodded and pulled out his phone. “Give me your account number.”
Emmy let out a huge sigh of relief and quickly handed him her card.
A second later, her phone chimed. The message confirming the transfer—millions—sounded like a choir of angels.
She was just about to get up and leave when a sugary-sweet voice piped up behind her.
“Emmy? You having coffee here too?”
Emmy turned around and saw Pattie, arm-in-arm with her best friend, both of them smirking.
Before Emmy could say a word, Pattie’s eyes landed on the man across from her and she gasped, covering her mouth in fake shock.
“Oh wow, your brother-in-law’s here too? He really dressed up today. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was some big-shot executive.”
She turned to her friend with a laugh, “He’s just a firefighter, but look at him acting all important.”
