James kept his eyes down, fingers deft and sure as he peeled an apple with a paring knife. The blade slid through the skin in one long, perfect ribbon, never breaking, before he flicked the peel straight into the trash.

Without even glancing up, he sliced the apple into neat, bite-sized pieces, stuck a toothpick in each one, and pushed the bowl over to Emmy.

“Why are you looking at me like that? I’m not stingy. If you want to do something, just do it.”

His voice was cool and even, impossible to read.

Emmy wrinkled her nose, grabbed a juicy slice, and popped it into her mouth. Still, she couldn’t help but grumble to herself. Wasn’t this the same guy who used to sulk and give her the silent treatment whenever Dean so much as texted her? Who’d leave her on read for hours just to make a point?

But ever since they’d moved in together, he really had mellowed out. At the very least, she hadn’t seen him get moody over Dean once.

Steve watched James cut the apple into perfect little pieces and couldn’t help but smirk. Who would’ve thought the tough guy would go soft?

He could remember a time when James wouldn’t even think about peeling an apple. He’d just wipe it on his shirt and bite right in, no fuss at all.

Guess even the toughest guys turn into softies when love’s involved.

Steve felt a pang of jealousy and reached for a toothpick, aiming to snag a piece of the apple James had prepared with obvious care. But before he could even touch the bowl, James smacked his hand away without hesitation.

“You got hands, don’t you? Peel your own. This is for my wife.”

Steve pulled his hand back with an exaggerated grimace.

This couple is too much. I’m going to choke on all this sweetness.

Emmy’s cheeks went bright red, so hot she wished she could just disappear. She never thought James would say something like that in front of his friend, but somehow, the apple tasted even sweeter in her mouth.

“Alright, alright!” Steve lifted his hands in surrender. “I’m leaving, okay? I’ll get out of your way so you two can keep being disgustingly cute.”
