Emmy froze. For a split second, it felt like every drop of blood in her body turned to ice.

“Emmy?” Teresa’s voice floated over from the hospital bed, uncertain. “Did you hear something about James?”

Emmy jerked back to reality, her eyes red and raw, but she wouldn’t let herself cry.

She managed a smile for her mom—except it wasn’t a smile at all, just a twisted, pained grimace.

“Mom, it’s not him.”

She bent down, picked up her phone, and tried to sound calm, but the words tumbled out all wrong.

“There’s some emergency at work. I need to step out. I’ll go find him right now.”

“Ivy, can you stay with my mom for a bit? Please?”

As soon as Emmy stepped into the hallway, the tears she’d been holding back came pouring out.

She wiped her face with the back of her hand, forcing herself to pull it together, then hurried toward the elevator.

Her phone buzzed in her hand. Abriella was calling.

But there was no signal in the elevator—just bits of static and muffled voices leaking through.

The second the doors slid open, Abriella’s voice finally came through clearly.

“...What do you mean a blessing in disguise? This totally is! I heard he even got a medal or something. Shouldn’t he be at the hospital by now?”

Emmy barely had time to process any of that. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of two figures lurking in the parking lot.

Aunt Sally and her daughter Rose.

They were huddled around her Porsche, fiddling with something in their hands.

Her car was already a mess—deep scratches everywhere, and someone had spray-painted ugly words like “Jinx” and “Slut” in bright red, scrawled all over the doors.

“What are you doing!” Emmy shouted.

Both women jumped. Rose spun on her heel and bolted.
