Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 27

Emmy’s heart gave a hard thump when she found herself standing this close to him, his handsome face right in front of her. Those deep, unreadable eyes made her feel like nothing could be hidden.

She put on her sweetest smile, letting her dimples show.

“I was hoping you could come with me to an event tomorrow evening. Would that work for you?”

James frowned. “I’ve got something on tomorrow night.”

Emmy’s smile faltered.

She remembered the last time—she’d turned him down just as bluntly.

Seriously, this guy could really hold a grudge.

Frustrated and a little helpless, she forced a smile.

“Alright, sorry to bother you.”

She pointed at the pink lunchbox on the counter.

“Don’t forget to eat while it’s still warm.”

The door closed with a soft click behind her.

James picked up the lunchbox.

Pink. Cute, actually.

He stared at it for a while, lost in thought.

The next evening, right outside the corporate gala.

Emmy had just handed her invitation to the attendant when she heard a soft, familiar voice behind her.

“Emmy, you’re here for the gala too?”

She sighed inwardly. Of all the people to run into.

She turned and saw Evelina in a designer V-neck dress, arm hooked through Dean’s. Evelina looked like she was born for the spotlight.

“Emmy, you don’t have to do this. He’s just your assistant.” Dean sounded like he was talking to a stubborn kid. “That little company you’re with won’t last much longer. Why not come work for me? I’ve got a few positions open. You can take your pick.”

“Yeah, Emmy,” Evelina jumped in, giving Dean a look full of admiration. “Dean just cleaned out a bunch of old troublemakers at Sparrow Group. Everyone there really respects him now.”

“Starlight Corporation is working closely with Sparrow Group these days, too,” Evelina added. “If you moved to Sparrow, with Dean looking out for you, nobody would dare talk behind your back.”

Something flickered in Emmy’s eyes.

In her last life, Sparrow Group had faced plenty of problems, but Dean handled each one with ruthless efficiency. She hadn’t expected him to clean house this quickly this time.

That was just how he was.

Even when he’d broken off their engagement—causing chaos for both their families’ companies—he’d managed the fallout so smoothly that the stock market didn’t even flinch the next day.

Dean was always calm and decisive, always knew exactly what he wanted.

Emmy smiled faintly, her tone cool and steady.

“If Sparrow Group has such a great future, shouldn’t you be staying there? It’s better than just being a deputy director at Starlight, isn’t it?”
