Evelina stared straight at her. “Really? Emmy?”
Emmy took a deep breath, her throat dry and scratchy with bitterness. She nodded. “Yeah, I did come to this school because of my ex. But what does that have to do with my thesis?”
A sudden grin broke across Evelina’s face. “Absolutely nothing. I just wanted to mess with you a little. You didn’t actually take me seriously, did you?”
She turned to the professors, switching to a professional tone. “Emmy’s thesis is excellent. Her ideas are fresh, her arguments solid. She passes in my book.”
The professors looked relieved, their faces lighting up with approval.
Emmy stepped out of the classroom, her face pale.
A classmate hurried over, worry etched in her expression. “Emmy, what took you so long? Was the MIT examiner giving you a hard time?”
Emmy didn’t respond. She just grabbed her things and quickly walked out of the building.
She wandered to the sports field and climbed all the way to the top row of the bleachers. Couples strolled past on the track below, their laughter floating on the wind.
For a moment, she drifted back to memories of coming here with Dean. He was in law school so she couldn’t visit him freely. It was always Dean who crossed over to see her. When he wasn’t in class—or napping through half of them—he practically lived on her campus. They’d walk the track together, hand in hand, lap after lap, never seeming to get tired.
She didn’t know how long she sat there, lost in thought, until two familiar figures appeared on the field.
Almost on instinct, Emmy grabbed her bag and hurried away in the opposite direction.
Not far behind, Dean was walking with Evelina, their hands linked.
Evelina leaned her head on his shoulder, speaking in a soft, gentle voice. Dean looked distracted, his eyes fixed somewhere far away.
Suddenly he snapped back to attention. “Sorry, what did you say?”
Evelina watched him, then let out a soft sigh. “I wanted to work with Dr. Pepper and compete in the AI International Competition at the end of the year. But if he finds out I approved a thesis with so many issues…”
She let the sentence trail off, then shrugged. “It doesn’t really matter. As long as Emmy can graduate, I don’t care if I get into his lab or not.”
Dean’s brow furrowed, frustration burning in his chest.
“She’s always been careless. Still hasn’t changed.”
He looked down at Evelina in his arms.
“I won’t let her mess up your future. I’ll handle it. That thesis won’t make it to Dr. Pepper.”
Evelina’s eyes lit up for a second before she covered it with a sigh, her voice soft and resigned. “Alright… I’ll do whatever you say.”
