After a few seconds, the door swung open.
James looked like he’d just finished showering. He had a towel hanging low on his hips and drops of water still clinging to his golden skin. Wet black hair fell over his forehead, little rivulets sliding down his sharp jaw and past his throat. His chest was broad, his abs defined, and that V-line at his waist made it basically impossible to look away.
No matter how many times Emmy had seen him like this, she couldn’t help sneaking a few extra glances.
Her eyes landed on his arm, where a few blisters looked even angrier and redder after being washed. She bit her lip and held out a lunchbox along with a small bag of medicine.
“These are for you.”
James didn’t bother taking them. He just turned and walked straight into his bedroom, not even closing the door.
Left with no other choice, Emmy followed him inside and set the food and medicine on the dining table.
It was only her second time in his apartment. Last time, she’d been so flustered she barely noticed anything except the mountain of gym equipment. Now, she realized the whole place was done in black, white, and gray—so tidy it almost felt a little cold.
The air still carried a fresh trace of his body wash.
The bedroom door was open, and she could hear the low buzz of a hairdryer from inside. She glanced in but didn’t go any farther.
Soon, James came out, towel in hand as he dried his hair. He spotted her and raised an eyebrow. “You’re still here?”
His question caught Emmy off guard. She scrambled for something to say. “Uh… I just wondered why you haven’t come over for dinner these last few days?”
She regretted asking as soon as the words left her mouth.
It was weird. At first, having him at her table had been awkward, but now, eating alone just felt off.
James paused, his dark eyes fixed on her, unreadable. “Figured you got back together with your ex. Didn’t want to be in the way.”
That memory outside the hospital flashed in her mind. She quickly explained, “There’s nothing between us anymore. That was just a misunderstanding.”
He didn’t respond, so she decided to be direct. “You already know he’s my ex, so you should know that’s all he is. He has a girlfriend now. We just ran into each other at the hospital, that’s it.”
James went completely still.
A weird jolt ran through him, sharp and electric, straight to his heart.
No one had ever taken care of his wounds like this before. No one had ever told him to be careful.
The antiseptic stung, but he stayed quiet, his gaze locked on her face as she worked.
Emmy squeezed out some burn ointment and gently smoothed it on with her fingertip, careful not to hurt him.
“This might sting, but if you let me finish, you won’t have a scar.”
She was about to let go when his hand shot out, grabbing her wrist.
With one swift movement, he pulled her forward. She stumbled, landing right against his burning hot chest.
