Aidan let out a long sigh on the other end of the call.

“Ms. Lincoln, that whole block is Nelson family property.”

“I asked around. Turns out, that building is registered under Mr. Nelson. They just fixed it up and are making it into a high-end restaurant. I tried to talk to the manager, but he shut me down right away. Said Mr. Nelson made the decision, and there’s zero chance of renting it out.”

Emmy pressed her fingers to her forehead. “Is there anywhere else?”

“Nothing that’s even close,” Aidan admitted, sounding unsure. “Ms. Lincoln, maybe… you could try asking Mr. Nelson again?”

“I heard Vista Home is under his name now too. We’ve been working with Vista Corporation, and Forward Technology is in a tough spot. If you reached out, maybe he’d—”

“No.” Emmy didn’t even let him finish.

“This is not the time to ask him for favors.”

She sank back into the sofa, staring out at the dark city. There was a hint of cold determination in her eyes.

“Unless… unless I can offer him something worth a lot more than a restaurant.”

With that, Emmy headed straight to her study and dove into work, putting together a proposal.

The night grew deeper. Suddenly, her front door clicked open.

She didn’t even look. Only James knew her apartment code.

He’d come over hoping to mooch a meal, but when he saw Emmy buried in work, he frowned and went to the kitchen. After a while, he came out with two bowls of hot noodles.

“Eat something,” he said, knocking on the study door.

Emmy grunted in response, lugged her laptop to the table, and started slurping noodles without ever taking her eyes off the screen.

James watched her for a moment, then finally reached over and shut her laptop with a sharp snap.

“Hey—?” Emmy blinked, finally looking up at him.

“Eat first. Work after,” James said, his tone brooking no argument.
