Dumped Omega? Now Their Alpha King Begs at My Feet novel Chapter 9

Kai's POV

A single, high-pitched, continuous beep sliced through the tense quiet of the ICU. It was a sound of absolute finality, a digital scream that announced the end.

It cut through my anger, leaving a cold, hollow void behind.

The jagged line on my grandfather's heart monitor went flat.

The medical team swarmed into action, a flurry of controlled panic. Their training took over, their movements sharp and practiced, but I could see the fear in their eyes.

They were fighting a battle they had already lost.

"He's in cardiac arrest! Get the crash cart!" Dr. Albright yelled, his voice strained and cracking.

I was shoved back against the wall as the team crowded around the bed, their blue scrubs a wall between me and my grandfather. I was frozen, watching them rip open his thin hospital gown, exposing his frail, pale chest.

A nurse was charging the defibrillator paddles, the whine of the machine rising in pitch, filling the air with a terrible sound of hope and failure all at once.

"Charging to two hundred!"

The smell of ozone filled my nostrils, sharp and sterile.

"Clear!" Albright shouted, pressing the paddles to my grandfather's chest.

His body jumped violently on the bed, a grotesque, unnatural twitch that made my stomach churn. The monitor didn't change.

The flat line remained, a silent, mocking scream that echoed the beep of the machine.

"No response! Pushing epinephrine! Charge to three hundred!" a nurse yelled, her voice tight with urgency as she injected a drug directly into his IV line.
