But Theodore didn’t stop; he kept calling, over and over. Of course, Larson wasn’t about to answer anymore.
When Emma came out of the shower, her phone rang again.
She glanced at the screen—Theodore. Her finger hovered over the answer button, hesitating.
“I picked up once before. You don’t mind, do you?” Larson’s voice drifted over from the living room. “He doesn’t know where your grandma is, he’s just…” He didn’t finish the thought.
That was exactly why Emma hesitated. If Theodore had no news about her grandmother, what was the point? She had neither the energy nor the patience to get entangled with him right now.
So, Theodore’s calls kept coming, but she didn’t answer any of them.
Meanwhile, Theodore sat in his office, his phone pressed to his ear, frustration mounting. Outside, a small group waited patiently.
“What’s going on in there? Is Mr. Whitman still caught up?” Jared appeared, glancing at the anxious secretary.
She shifted uncomfortably. “I’ve reminded him several times, but Mr. Whitman hasn’t come out yet.”
“I’ll check.” Jared rapped on the door, then opened it and poked his head inside. “Theo, are you still busy? Everyone’s waiting for you to start the meeting.”
“I’m coming.” Theodore finally shoved his phone into his pocket and stood.
In the conference room, the company’s senior and mid-level managers were already seated, all eyes on Theodore as he took his place.
“Apologies, something came up. Let’s get started,” Theodore said, though his mind was clearly elsewhere.
Theodore nodded, but his mind was elsewhere. Truthfully, Rossi Enterprises wasn’t what was weighing on him.
“Honestly, Theo, our lack of progress this year is all because those two deals fell through,” Jared said, following him into the executive office.
Theodore dropped into his chair and rubbed his brow. “Exactly. This time, we can’t afford to fail.”
Jared leaned in with a conspiratorial grin. “Theo, do you believe in fate? Because it seems to me both deals fell apart for the same reason.”
Theodore frowned, puzzled.
“It was all because of Emma,” Jared declared. “She’s not involved this time, so we’re bound to succeed.”
