Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 337

Theodore’s lips trembled, pale as ash. “Emma…”

“Fine. Let me spell it out for you. The reason I didn’t tell you about those messages is because I never intended to. I was saving them as evidence for the divorce. If it weren’t for what happened last night, if you hadn’t agreed to come to city hall, the first place you’d have seen those messages would’ve been the courtroom.”

“There’s really… no chance for us?” Theodore stood rooted to the spot, desperation in his eyes. “That photo you got—I never saw it. I’d fallen asleep that night. Cici staged the whole thing just to get a rise out of you…”

“So what?” Emma’s gaze was steady. “Does it even matter? Did you, or did you not, sleep with her?”

Theodore’s mind flashed back to that night—him and Jared, drinking too much at Cecilia’s place. His face went sheet-white.

Emma saw all she needed in his expression. She let out a cold laugh. “You’re disgusting, Theodore.”

She turned and walked toward the front doors.

Theodore stared at her retreating figure. She was moving too fast—her limp made her steps uneven, and it stabbed at him, the pain burning in his chest.

“Let’s go, Mr. Whitman.” Larson’s voice was icy as he stepped up beside Theodore.

He hadn’t realized his sister had been put through so much by Theodore.

Theodore understood now—there was no way to fix this marriage.

He finally bowed his head and followed Larson after Emma.

The process itself was simple.

Both agreed to the divorce; neither contested the terms of the property division. All that was left was to wait out the mandatory thirty-day cooling-off period and come back for the final paperwork.

Still, Theodore insisted on changing the financial terms. He wanted Emma to keep her original shares in the company—and he wanted to give her more.

His logic was simple: her brother had shares, her aunt had shares—why shouldn’t she? Even if they weren’t together, he wanted to be sure Emma would never want for anything.

Emma considered it. “Fine, but cash it out. I want everything paid out at market value.”

Theodore gave a bitter smile. “Wouldn’t it be better to keep the shares? You’d get annual dividends—a steady income.”

“No,” Emma replied. “I don’t want to be tied to you in any way, not now, not ever. Let’s get this over with, clean and final. Besides, what if your company goes under?”

Theodore’s smile was forced, his voice unsteady. “Why does it have to be this final? Even if our marriage is over, we were high school classmates. We live in the same city. Maybe someday we’ll run into each other.”

Emma thought, Not a chance.

“That’s enough. No more pointless talk,” she said, ready to leave with her brother. “Oh, and that money you gave Cecilia? I’m letting it go. Since we’re divorced, our agreement is void. You can marry whoever you want—go ahead and marry your darling Cici for all I care!”
