Theodore and Jared had both vanished from the office without warning, leaving Hanley to juggle everything on his own. He was at his wits’ end, complaining nonstop. After three days of this, he couldn’t take it anymore and dialed them both again, practically begging them to come back. The company stock had hit rock bottom again at the start of the week. Was anyone even running this place anymore?
The word “stock” from Hanley’s rant suddenly jolted Theodore’s memory.
Of course—the shares!
He immediately called Emma.
This time, the call went through, and she actually answered.
“What is it?” Emma’s tone was ice-cold, more distant than if she were speaking to a stranger.
“Emma…” Theodore’s voice caught in his throat. In the past, whenever he called her, he could practically see her smile just from the warmth in her voice. Now, he heard nothing but frost.
“Speak.”
“I…” Theodore’s voice was rough, “I’m home. It just feels… strange. The house is so empty.”
“Oh.” Emma’s reply was even colder. “Well, you could always invite your friends over and throw a party. Celebrate your freedom.”
“Emma, I didn’t—I wouldn’t…”
“Why not? My brother’s already planning a party for me tonight. Looks like we both get to celebrate, don’t we?”
Theodore tried to laugh, but the sound caught in his chest and turned bitter. “Emma…”
“If you have something to say, say it. If not, I’m hanging up. I’m busy.”
“Wait, wait! Don’t hang up!” Theodore blurted. “You wanted your shares cashed out, right? We need to set a time to process the paperwork. You have to transfer your shares to me first, otherwise I can’t explain it to the board.”
“Fine.”
“So… when are you available?”
“That’s up to you. Whenever you schedule the board meeting, just let me know and I’ll sign the papers.”
“Okay… good, I’m calling a meeting right now. It’ll start in an hour, just wait—”
