Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 353

Hanley and Cathie had already left, but Cathie’s words still echoed in Jared’s ears.

He frowned, pulled out his phone, and called Nita.

She picked up almost immediately.

“Where are you?” Jared’s voice was cold.

“At home.”

He could hear their son chattering in the background. Relief washed over him; he’d known Nita wouldn’t do anything out of line.

Thinking about Nita’s mother passing, he asked, “About your mom…”

“It’s all taken care of,” Nita replied, her voice unusually calm.

“Nita, I…” Jared hesitated, then pressed, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You were busy. I didn’t want to bother you. I managed on my own.”

“Alright, I’ll come home early tonight. Ask the housekeeper to make dinner for me, and wait up.” No matter what, losing a mother was a big deal. He had to check on her.

Nita didn’t answer. She just hung up.

As Jared lowered his phone, he noticed Theodore stepping out of his office, watching him, with Cecilia standing nearby.

Cecilia’s face was tight with concern. “Jared, is Nita…?”

Jared shrugged. “Nothing happened. Nita’s back home. She just went to her hometown to arrange her mother’s funeral.”

Theodore said quietly, “You’d better head back early. Losing a parent is no small thing. Nita might say she doesn’t blame you, but who knows what she really feels?”
