Emma Bennett’s life had settled into a gentle, uncomplicated rhythm.
Her grandmother’s visa had finally come through, and the plane tickets were booked. Soon, Larson Bennett would be accompanying both her and her grandmother to Europe.
Ever since Larson had stepped into her life, many of the worries that once weighed on her—finding an apartment abroad, sorting out transportation—had simply vanished. He handled everything with quiet efficiency, leaving Emma with nothing more to do than pack her suitcase and show up at the airport.
Most days, her routine was blissfully predictable: a visit to Meridian Wellness Center for therapy and rehab, and if she had time left over, an afternoon tea with Vivian and Renee Chance.
That day was no different. Larson had sent his driver to take her to the Wellness Center. As usual, the driver waited in the car after she got out, never following her inside.
But as soon as Emma walked into the Wellness Center, she spotted Theodore Whitman sitting in the lobby.
He stood the moment he saw her, stepping forward with a tentative smile. “Emma.”
He’d clearly made an effort today. His hair was freshly cut, the stubble gone from his jaw. Though he looked thinner than before, there was a determined energy about him.
Emma gave him a curt nod, the kind you’d give a stranger, and tried to walk past.
“Emma.” He quickly stepped into her path, blocking her way.
She stopped, regarding him with a mixture of confusion and annoyance. “What is it? You here to share some good news?” Her tone dripped with sarcasm.
Theodore blinked, caught off guard. “Good news?”
“You seem so desperate to talk to me—I just assumed you had something to celebrate. Let me guess: the miracle cure finally worked? Your precious one’s infertility is gone? You’re going to be a father?” Her words were ice-cold.
“No…” Color drained from his face. “Of course not, Emma. I’m here to see you.”
