Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 373

Love and indifference—he’d never really stopped to question which he felt.

All he ever wanted was to prove himself to Cecilia, to show her just how powerful he was, how easily he could command the world around him. If he wanted, he could lavish a woman with unending affection, make her feel like the center of the universe.

Of course, in doing so, he hurt Emma.

But back then, he hadn’t thought that far. He let himself get lost in the whirlwind that was Cecilia, forgetting everything else.

He tried to explain it to Emma. He told her he was only grateful for the kindness Cecilia had shown as a volunteer all those years ago—that nothing ever happened between them.

Maybe that excuse was just convincing enough. After all, he needed some respectable reason to mask the ugliness festering inside him.

Yet, he believed it himself. He told himself he’d do anything for Cecilia, but he’d never betray Emma. His definition of not betraying her was simple: as long as he didn’t actually cross the line, he was in the clear.

But then Cathie told him—emotional infidelity is still infidelity.

Was that true?

Had he crossed that line, even if only in his heart?

He couldn’t even tell anymore.

When it came to Cecilia, was it regret that gnawed at him, or was it love? He didn’t know.

The only thing he was sure of was Emma’s devotion. Emma loved him—loved him to the point of obsession. So, no matter how his heart wavered, Emma would always be Mrs. Whitman. That would never change.

But then, on that night on the island, when Cecilia wrapped her arms around him from behind, everything crystallized. He knew, without a doubt, that nothing could ever truly happen between him and Cecilia.

His heart belonged to Emma.

That night, more than ever, he wanted to see Emma.

So he dropped everything and rushed home.

But Emma was already gone.

He never thought she’d really leave.

Even with all the privilege in the world, even with more money than she could ever spend, she could still walk away just like that.
