“No, I won’t.” Emma didn’t look back. “Even if we meet again someday, let’s just pretend we never knew each other.”
“Emma—” Theodore called after her, his voice breaking, but Emma didn’t hear him. She was already in the car, putting distance between them with every moment.
The sorrow he’d been holding back finally crashed over him like a tidal wave, overwhelming him.
His vision blurred until the world around him faded away. He leaned against the car, struggling to regain his composure.
At least, he thought, when it was time to say goodbye, he hadn’t lost control like this. He had managed to leave Emma with the best version of himself.
“Theo.”
Through the haze, a startled voice broke through.
He turned his head away, hiding his face from view.
“Theo, you’re crying…” Cecilia’s voice was a mix of shock and disappointment.
Theodore turned away completely, and for a few moments, he simply stood there. When he finally faced them again, his expression was empty, all traces of emotion wiped clean.
Jared and Cecilia were standing in front of him.
Jared clapped him on the shoulder. “Come on, man. It’s a new chapter. Time to let go.”
Theodore said nothing.
“We’re here to pick you up, Theo,” Cecilia said gently, reaching for his sleeve. “Come on, let’s sit down somewhere and talk it out.”
Theodore pulled away. “No, you two go ahead. I have something to take care of.”
“What could you possibly have to do?” Cecilia frowned, annoyance coloring her voice. “You’re free now.”
“I need to stop by the bank. There are some things I need to handle.” Theodore opened the car door and got in.
“Theo…” Cecilia called after him, but he had already started the engine and pulled away.
