Is Theodore Whitman’s medical report real or fake? And who would go out of their way to slip it to Cecilia Chambers?
Jared had only managed to answer the first question.
He’d gone through a whole web of contacts, finally confirming that Theodore had, in fact, gone in for a checkup recently. The results matched the report exactly.
As for the second question—who passed it to Cecilia—well, whoever it was, they clearly meant trouble.
But honestly, that didn’t matter anymore. At this point, Jared was backed into a corner. Betraying Theodore was now non-negotiable, and if he wanted to pull this off alone, he’d have to cozy up to Melvin Laurent.
Larson Bennett was moving into Cresthaven, and soon enough, the whole industry would be theirs for the taking. Add Melvin Laurent into the mix—a spoiled heir with more money than sense—and if Melvin was willing to cut Jared in, he’d be a fool not to take whatever he could get. In a world where everyone was a shark, Melvin was the only one naïve enough to manipulate—almost like a second Theodore.
Jared sneered, thinking back. “Funny how, when Young Rossi first showed up, everyone said our company was his obvious partner. Melvin Laurent was desperate to get in with us, sucking up every day, trying to use us as a stepping stone. And now…” He clenched his teeth. “Tables sure do turn, don’t they?”
Cecilia shrank back, a little scared of Jared’s fury. “So… what do we do now?”
If Jared needed Melvin Laurent, and Melvin wanted nothing to do with her, what would happen to her?
Jared’s gaze was icy. “You keep your head down. Don’t draw attention, don’t try to stand out. And I want every one of your accounts squeaky clean—no posts, nothing that could be traced back to me.”
Cecilia’s face flushed red with anger, but she didn’t dare argue. After his last outburst, not even tears would come; she just stared at him, eyes wet and wounded. “So I’m supposed to hide away? What am I, some dirty secret?”
Jared shot her a sideways look. “Just behave. I’m supporting you and the kid, aren’t I?”
“What am I to you?” Cecilia finally snapped, shouting in frustration. “I walked away from being Theo’s wife for you, and now I’m the one who’s supposed to be kept in the shadows?”
