Chapter 28
As Jessica spoke, she leaned toward Mason, wanting him to notice the curves under her white dress.
“Who are you?” Mason asked. She was blocking his way. He slowly lifted his gaze, his cold eyes landing on Jessica. His brow creased just slightly. “What’s with the long face? Did someone in your family die?”
He didn’t look the least bit interested in her. If anything, he just seemed annoyed she was in his way. “You’re an eyesore,” he said flatly.
Jessica’s smile froze, and the color drained from her face. Mason had just shut her down in front of everyone. Humiliation burned through her, so sharp she almost lost it.
Mason didn’t spare her another glance. He strode past her in long steps and went straight to Sienna.
Sienna was tall for a woman, and she usually stood out. But Mason’s height dwarfed hers, his shadow falling right over her.
He looked down, his deep eyes tracing her beautiful, serious face. A small, amused smile tugged at his thin lips.
He’d only seen her from afar before. He remembered those long legs and her slim waist.
But up close, under the dim light, she looked even more breathtaking. Her face might have been cold and distant, but she was stunning.
“Hey,” he murmured, his low, lazy voice brushing against her ear. It carried a teasing edge, laced with danger. “Need a hand?”
He stood close, but not too close-just far enough to keep it polite, right on the edge.
Sienna caught a whiff of his clean scent, like pine with a faint trace of tobacco. She lifted her eyes and met his. They were deep and dark, pulling her in.
Having him this close made her feel cornered. He was a stranger, and she wasn’t used to this.
Sienna quietly stepped back. Her expression stayed calm and cool. “That’s okay,” she said evenly. “But thank you.”
She kept her distance, but she wasn’t rude.
Mason let out a low laugh that rumbled deep in his chest. The sound was rich and magnetic, impossible to ignore.
“Alright,” he said slowly, lips curved in a faint grin. He slipped one hand into his pocket and turned a little to the side.
But the way he positioned himself, he ended up standing right between Sienna and Ernest, completely blocking Ernest’s dark, angry glare.
Without saying a word, his stance alone made it look like he was shielding her, ready to step in if needed.
His head tilted lazily, still looking relaxed and a little wicked. In a teasing, low voice only she could hear, he said, “Well then. I’m looking forward to the show.”
Even with the distance between them and Sienna’s cold front, there was something strange in the air. It felt like they just clicked.
When Ernest saw this, it cut like a knife straight to his chest. The pain was so sharp he could hardly breathe.
When he watched Mason stand there, guarding Sienna like that, panic and jealousy surged through him, so strong that it felt like he might lose his mind.
The rest of the room was stunned. Eyes locked on Sienna, wide with disbelief.
They wondered how Sienna could know someone like Mason.
It was shocking enough when she had ties to Alvin. But now, here was Mason.
What rattled them even more was how she treated Mason. She had turned him down, acting cold and distant.
Anyone else in that room would have groveled just to exchange a word with Mason. They’d be thrilled to lick his shoes if it meant getting his attention.
Jessica saw it all, and rage consumed her. Her hands shook as her perfect nails dug into her palms. Jealousy ate at her so hard that she thought she might explode.
First Alvin, now Mason. She couldn’t understand why men like that always noticed Sienna instead of her.
She was the daughter of the Fairbank family. To her, her family, her blood, was way above some nobody from the slums like Sienna.
But that fake, Sienna, was always stealing the spotlight that should have been hers.
Jessica bit her lip, fighting to keep her face from twisting with jealousy. She reached out and tugged on Lauren’s arm, who was still staring dumbly. “Lauren, did I do something wrong?”
She looked like she was about to cry, tugging at his sympathy.
Lauren’s eyes flicked to Sienna, then he remembered that the Fairbank family was tied to the Cooper family now. That gave him just enough courage to stand tall in front of Mason.
He sucked in a breath and forced a stiff smile. “Mr. Brown, you don’t understand. Sienna used to be my sister. This is just a little family matter.”
“I heard you’re close with the Cooper family in Orlathis City,” Lauren continued. “They actually came to us— the Fairbank Group for a partnership. So maybe someday we’ll work with you. We should all be friends, right? No reason to make a big deal out of something so small. What do you say?”
He emphasized the Cooper family, clearly trying to puff himself up by showing off the fact that the Coopers had come to them.
Mason looked at him like he had just told a joke. He let out a cold laugh, his eyes narrowing with lazy danger as they locked on Lauren.
A chilling smile curved his lips, completely devoid of warmth. “Oh? Are you trying to use the Cooper family
to threaten me?”
That look alone was enough to send a shiver down Lauren’s spine. It felt like he’d been dropped into an ice bath. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead as his body trembled.
His chest tightened until he couldn’t breathe. It felt like something was lodged in his throat, choking off his words.
Suddenly, a sharp laugh shattered the heavy silence.
Heads turned at once. All eyes landed on the stunningly beautiful Sienna, who held her phone in one hand, lazily tapping the screen with the other.
