“Yeah,” Joyce replied with a small nod.
She watched the fireworks still blooming overhead and asked, “So… are you still going to cook for her?”
Emilia had always thought the new chef at home was actually Felix himself.
Felix chuckled and shook his head. “Silly girl. You really think just because things didn’t work out between me and her, our families would stop seeing each other?”
“Your brother isn’t that petty.”
Relief washed over Joyce’s face, though she looked a bit embarrassed.
Felix reached across and ruffled her hair, then focused back on the road.
Above them, fireworks continued to burst in the sky. Inside a suite at the International Hotel, Raymond Kaufman stood by the window, a glass of red wine in hand. On the table beside him sat a small wooden fox carving.
He’d watched the livestream earlier in the day. He knew Emilia had agreed to the engagement.
Now, he let out a rueful, quiet laugh.
“Come home a little late, and you’re late for everything.”
“Emily… is this really the right choice for you?”
“Is he truly the one you belong with?”
“And what about me? Who is the one meant for me?”
…
Rooftop garden.
Everything was aglow. Reflected in Emilia’s eyes were the flickering lights of drone fireworks blooming over the city.
She watched as the firework veil settled over the woman’s profile—her own, she realized—while in the distance, flowerbeds glimmered and a massive whale-shaped drone swept in, carrying a ring.
Then, against the dark sky, the name “Emily” appeared in glowing script.
“That’s me?” Emilia whispered.
Theodore nodded, then reached out and took her hand.
“Just like I always hoped,” he said softly. “Emily, I want to wipe away everything that ever happened between you and him.”
“Every scar he left—I want to heal them all.”
