Emilia’s brow furrowed ever so slightly as she regarded the two elders seated across from her.
In truth, things had turned out far better than several of the scenarios she’d imagined on her way over. At least the game was still in motion; as long as the negotiation continued, she still stood a chance of reclaiming what rightfully belonged to the Dennis family—though she’d need to adjust her tactics a bit.
Her gaze flicked to Vivienne, who was already watching her in return.
Catching Emilia’s eyes, Vivienne offered a quick, easy smile. “Emilia, I really don’t see a problem with this. Grandpa and Grandma Erickson truly do need to rest. Wouldn’t you agree?”
Vivienne remembered how, back when she’d been arranging the hospital transfer, Christian’s people had done everything they could to complicate things for her. Clearly, Emilia was terrified of seeing Vivi’s Whispers launch as planned. The more she thought about it, the more confident Vivienne felt in her position.
Meanwhile, the two elders exchanged a look of their own. The whole reason they’d pushed to shorten the timeline was to bring this drawn-out chess match to a swift conclusion. After hearing Emilia agree to Theodore’s engagement proposal yesterday, they knew they couldn’t afford to delay. Give it another couple of months, and Emilia and Theodore would be married already.
After much discussion, they’d agreed to shave off a month. Any less would require renegotiating the contract with all parties involved—something Emilia would never accept. One month, they decided, was the maximum she’d be willing to tolerate. And with one month less, Emilia would hardly have the bandwidth to plan a wedding with Theodore, much less anything else.
With this in mind, Parker feigned a weary cough, his voice thin. “Emily, what do you think?”
Emilia’s gaze lingered on the older couple before she finally nodded. “Alright. I agree,” she said. “But I have one condition.”
Vivienne rolled her eyes—of course there’d be a catch. “Emilia, you—”
“My condition is that after this, there will be no further changes to the agreement,” Emilia cut in, not bothering to let Vivienne finish.
Parker coughed again. “Fine. That’s acceptable.” He picked up the phone on his desk and called for Israel to come in.
