Chapter 15
Vincent snapped awake, his eyes fixing on Elizabeth at the doorway. His gaze remained eerily calm before drifting away as he murmured, “Mom, I’m fine. Not causing trouble.”
Elizabeth took in his bloodshot eyes and stubborn look, her heart softening. She let out a soft sigh.
“Rebecca’s gone. You… you’re the head of the Walker family. The whole clan depends on you-when one thrives, all thrive; when one suffers, all suffer. How could you neglect the family business over matters of the heart?”
Vincent dropped his gaze without answering, fingers tightening around the blanket.
His mother had been deceived, left pregnant and alone. Even at her most desperate, she’d worked multiple jobs, wear- ing herself thin but never stinting on his care.
All he’d ever wanted was to claim his rightful place in the Walker family, shed the “bastard” label, and give his moth- er a life of dignity-free from the sneers of strangers on the street.
Now, facing her reproach, he refused to argue.
Elizabeth pressed on, her tone weighted with concern. “Rebecca’s gone, but you still have Susan. You still have two children. Why cling to the past?”
“I know you’re suffering inside, but you’ve worked so hard to become the family head, and you couldn’t have done it without the White family’s help. There are restless people in the Walker family always eyeing your position.”
“If you keep this up, handing our huge family business to others, how can you repay the White family’s help?!”
Elizabeth’s words struck Vincent right in the heart, giving him a fleeting delusion.
Now the Walker family’s Jingshu Group was built under both his and Rebecca’s names.
He’d never destroy what they poured their hearts into. If he did well enough, when he met Rebecca in the afterlife, wouldn’t he stand taller?
With this thought, hope sparked in Vincent’s heart, and light returned to his eyes. He wasn’t lifeless anymore.
Elizabeth watched Vincent slowly sit up in bed and sighed in relief. She’d feared her son would never recover.
Thinking of Rebecca, she sighed deeply. She still liked Rebecca very much. But Vincent’s position couldn’t afford love trapping him now.
If Vincent fell from his heights, she’d lose this luxurious life too.
She couldn’t help thinking, thankfully Rebecca was dead. That woman had too much influence on Vincent.
After speaking with Elizabeth that day, Vincent had his secretary arrange daily housekeeping at Spring Harmony Vil-

He stopped going to Brocade Central Villa, staying overnight at Spring Harmony Villa every night.
This behavior finally made Susan start to panic.
At first, she just thought Vincent felt guilty about Rebecca, which was why he kept going off the grid. Once he got through this period, he would let go. Then they would get married, and she would enter the Walker family tree just like the child. This was beyond doubt.
But now it seemed she had underestimated the place that woman held in Vincent’s heart!
In the office, Vincent was handling documents when his secretary announced, “Vincent, Miss Susan says the child is sick and asks you to come back and see.”
Vincent’s hand paused, a shadow flickering in his eyes.
The child was the point of conflict between him and Rebecca. That was why he hadn’t gone to see the child since Re- becca’s accident.
He deluded himself into thinking: since Rebecca minded Susan’s child, he would just ignore it.
But now, thinking of that conversation with Elizabeth, to secure his position as family head and ensure the family business would have a successor, he had to accept the child.
The child is also related to Rebecca. Thinking this, Vincent immediately lost that sense of conflict.
He thought of the newborn child. How did it get sick so suddenly?
He put down the documents in his hand, stood up, and asked, “Did you call a doctor? What’s wrong?”
The secretary replied, “I heard a doctor was called. It seems like a fever.”
Vincent walked out and ordered, “To Brocade Central Villa.”
“Yes.”
