His shameless words lit a fire in me. I glared at him, my voice sharp and cold. “There’s a strict process for promotions here, John. Are you really trying to twist the rules for your own gain? That’s not just unfair to everyone else—it’s downright disgusting. And by the way, divorced or not, have you thought about what would happen if Remy heard what you’re saying right now?”
Remy’s had enough thrown at him lately. Julia’s come back sick, his mom’s been causing chaos at home, and even though the media drama finally quieted down, Thompson Corporation is still hurting. They’ve lost a few big accounts for no good reason, and while skills and connections matter, what really counts right now is trust and a leader’s integrity.
For John to try and pull something like this behind closed doors—especially now—was just reckless. If Remy found out, John would be finished. He was basically playing with fire.
Elite Tech’s been around for forty years. John’s been here for over thirty, slowly climbing his way up to VP. Hardly anyone ever dares talk back to him, let alone call him out to his face.
But my words clearly pissed him off. He ground out his cigar right on my desk, his beady eyes narrowing, a nasty look flashing across his face.
I knew things were about to go south. I reached for the desk call button.
John grabbed my wrist before I could press it, his hand clamping down right on my not-quite-healed wound. A jolt of pain shot through me and I sucked in a sharp breath.
