“Sorry I’m late. Mr. Swanson had to leave for an urgent trip, so I’m here on his behalf with full authority.”
Everyone at Elite Tech knew that when Ryan said “full authority,” it was as good as having Elliot in the room himself.
“Ryan, please—have a seat.” I stood up and politely gestured to the seat at the head of the table.
Ryan didn’t take the seat of honor though. Instead, he sat down right next to me, all tall and effortlessly handsome in that way only Europeans seem to pull off. For a second, it felt like the entire room was orbiting around him.
He opened his laptop, tapped a few keys, and a list of nine names flashed up on the screen.
“I can’t stay long—I’ve got other things to handle. I’m here mainly to deliver Mr. Swanson’s final decision on the project team. Ms. Greenwood and these nine employees have been selected. If anyone here has concerns or objections, you can email the CEO directly. Mr. Swanson will deal with it himself. Any questions? If not, I’ll head out.”
He made it pretty clear there was no room for discussion. The decision was made and that was that.
No one dared say a word. We just sat there and watched as Ryan walked out of the conference room, taking with him everyone’s last shred of hope for a do-over.
Even though he’d said we could complain to the CEO, I was pretty sure none of the people who didn’t make the list would actually dare to send that email.
Ryan blew in like a hurricane and left behind nothing but calm.
I’d been bracing myself for at least two hours of back-and-forth, but Ryan handled everything in just a few sentences.
A few days ago, when I’d brought up forming the project team to Elliot, he’d mentioned that when the time came, Ryan would be there to back me up.
Turns out, Elliot had known exactly when I’d be starting the selection process. While he was away on business, he left Ryan here to support me.
And honestly, Ryan was shockingly effective.
The only thing I couldn’t figure out was how his list matched mine exactly. How did he know the exact people I wanted?
