The flowers lined up on the terrace—my favorites—looked like someone had tried to care for them, but every single pot was fading, one step from withered.
Inside, every chair, table, every plant and corner felt so familiar. It was only a few days since I’d left, but stepping in now, it was like I’d returned to a different life altogether.
“Dad’s home,” Cindy whispered, pointing at the shoes by the door.
I was distracted when we got out of the car, didn’t even notice Remy’s car parked outside.
Then, out of nowhere, I heard something strange coming from the storage room. It sounded like someone crying.
I told Cindy to wait on the couch and went to check it out.
The storage room was tiny, barely big enough for a narrow bed, a desk, and a chair. The floor was a mess, scattered with women’s clothes and toiletries.
The bed was in shambles, the whole room thick with a sour, heavy smell that made my stomach twist.
Remy was there, still in his bathrobe, straddling Julia’s bare waist. His hands were locked tight around her throat.
I couldn’t see Julia’s face, but I saw her hands flailing, trying to push Remy off. Choked noises came from her throat, and her thin legs kicked weakly at the sheets—like she was fighting with everything she had just to breathe.
“You worthless bitch, who told you to come back? Why couldn’t you just die out there? It would’ve been better for everyone if you never came home and ruined my life.”
“All of this is because of you. If you hadn’t meddled, Avery would never have shut me out.”
“I told you before, I only ever loved Avery. Never you. Why can’t you just let go? Why are you doing this to me? Go to hell. Just die already. Die!”
Remy was completely out of control, his voice breaking with rage. For a split second, I saw the same terrifying face he’d shown me that Sunday morning, the morning he’d turned on me—violent, merciless, inhuman.
Old panic gripped me. Every instinct screamed at me to run. I took a step back but bumped into the door, the sound echoing through the room.
