“What’s got you so spooked?” I asked, raising an eyebrow as I walked over.

One look was all it took—I instantly got why Vicky was freaking out.

Sitting there was a sharp suit and a silk robe, both men’s, both obviously high-end and custom-tailored.

The two pieces I owed Elliot had finally arrived.

Vicky stepped back, giving the clothes a detective-level once-over. One arm stretched out, the other hand tapping her chin, totally playing it up. “Don’t even try to lie, Avery. These are definitely not for Mr. Thompson. Spill it—who are they for?” She circled around the suit, looking it over from every angle. “Let me guess. The guy who wears these? Tall, at least six-three, probably around 190 pounds, broad shoulders, narrow hips, legs for days. Honestly, the only person in Georgia Bay who fits that description is Elliot, the big boss at Elite Tech.”

How did this girl get it so right? I felt my cheeks heat up and decided not to even try explaining. Sometimes the more you say, the worse it sounds. Better to just shut up and play dumb.

I pointed at the door. “Out. Now. Since you’re such a genius at analysis, I want your report on my desk before you leave tonight. Mess up even once and I’m docking your quarterly bonus five grand.”

At the mention of money, Vicky’s face fell. She knocked herself on the head, then pressed her fists to her chest in mock agony, one knee bent like she was about to beg. “So mean! I bet you’ll think twice before owing anyone again. Alright, Ms. Greenwood, I’m getting to work. But hey, to err is human, right? If I make a little mistake here or there, can you please go easy on me? I swear, I’ll work myself to the bone for you. Fire, knives, you name it—I’ll go through it.”

I couldn’t help laughing. “Get out, you drama queen!”

“On it, boss!”

Once Vicky and her antics were gone, I took a breath and texted Elliot: Hey boss, you around?

Totally normal. Nothing suspicious, no hidden meaning.

He replied instantly: Ms. Greenwood, worried I’m living too well and want me gone?

Could he just not be weird for once?
