Remy’s eyes were rimmed red as he dropped to one knee at my feet and pressed his face against my knee. His whole body trembled, barely holding back the storm inside him. “Please, Avery. Don’t stop loving me. Six years ago, I was nothing but a broken mess. You were the one who picked up the pieces, stitched me back together, made me feel like a real person again. I love you. I mean it. I’m begging you—just give me one more chance. That’s all I want. Please.”
I shook my head. “No, Remy. The moment you married me but still held onto your promise to another woman, our ending was already set in stone. I’m not here to ruin your life. Let’s just get divorced. You can go be with your family. I won’t say a word against you to anyone.”
I stood up, planning to head back to the bedroom, but Remy latched onto my leg, desperate, all that proud, untouchable swagger he used to have at Georgia Bay totally gone.
“I don’t want your so-called kindness. It’s been years, Avery. I stopped loving her a long time ago. I only helped her because I felt sorry for her. That’s the truth. There’s nothing left between us. Please, Avery, don’t leave me. I can’t go on without you.”
“Remy, let’s just end this with some dignity, okay? Don’t make me regret ever loving you.”
Before I could finish, Julia suddenly rushed over, shoving me hard before turning to catch Remy as he slumped, broken. She was crying as she yelled, “Remy, what are you talking about? You said I was the only one you ever truly loved. How can you say you haven’t loved me for years? I don’t want your pity—I want you to love me the way you used to. Remy, tell her. Tell her you only love me. Please, say it!”
Julia shook him, desperate for an answer, her voice wild with panic.
Something strange flickered in Remy’s eyes, like a shadow swirling in the dark. It was as if, just for a second, he wasn’t Remy at all, but someone—or something—else entirely.
Suddenly, he grabbed Julia by the throat, his eyes flashing with a terrifying, blood-red rage. His fingers clamped down tight.
Julia gasped, mouth open wide, clawing at his hand with both of hers. Her eyes bulged as she struggled to breathe.
