The next morning, Cindy was doing a lot better. She wandered through the house, grinning as she took in all the changes, checking out every room like she was seeing them for the first time. Then, without a second thought, she threw a little green frog toy straight into the trash.

I remembered that toy. Julia had won it for her at the night market, tossing rings until she finally got lucky. Cindy used to love it so much, carrying it everywhere she went. Seeing her toss it now, I knew she was truly disappointed in Julia as her mom.

I asked Remy what he planned to do about Julia. He didn’t even hesitate. “My daughter doesn’t deserve to get hurt like this. Julia’s going to have to face the consequences.”

I believed him. When it came to his daughter, Remy might be able to lie to me, but he couldn’t lie to himself as a father.

Remy decided not to go to work that day. I still had two days left of vacation and thought maybe, just maybe, we’d finally get some quiet, happy time together.

But then Mike called, his voice tight with urgency, asking Remy if he should start emergency crisis management.

I grabbed my phone and opened up social media. Julia’s self-shot video from the night before was everywhere. It had been edited like a pro, turning her into the perfect victim.

In the video, she was suddenly the wronged wife—her love and her daughter stolen away, now sick and running out of time, being denied her last moments with her child.

And I? I was painted as the homewrecker who’d destroyed her marriage to Remy.

She’d posted the video in the middle of the night, and by morning it had gone completely viral. Shares and comments were skyrocketing. Most of the comments were full of sympathy for her and hate for me—stuff so nasty, it could break anyone.

One line from her—“I just want to spend what little time I have left with my daughter. Is that really so wrong?”—put me right at the center of it all.

People who didn’t know a thing about what really happened called me every awful name they could think of: evil, cheap, doomed to be alone forever...
