“Mr. Thompson, the trending search is still up. Julia isn’t at the Southside villa, her phone’s disconnected, and we haven’t been able to find her. I’ve already sent more people out to look. I’ll let you know the second there’s any news.”
“Why can’t you get it taken down? Pay them. Whatever it costs, just get it off.” Remy’s voice was low, barely controlled, but you could hear the anger simmering underneath.
Mike promised he’d handle it and ended the call.
Remy’s face was as dark as a storm. He stood there, silent for a couple of seconds, then suddenly threw his phone across the room with all his strength.
The phone smashed against the wall, breaking into pieces that scattered across the floor.
His eyes were bloodshot, burning with fury, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his face twitched. For a second, he didn’t even look human—more like something wild and dangerous.
Cindy was terrified. She dove into my arms, clinging to my neck, her little body shaking as she cried in silence. Her eyes were red and swollen, but she was too scared to make a sound.
It had been two days of pure fear—no six-year-old should ever have to deal with that.
The Southside villa.
I almost laughed at myself for being so naive—and at Remy, for being so two-faced. He was one person to my face, someone else entirely behind my back.
The day we got married, there was a murder in Southside. I’m not the superstitious type, but who wouldn’t hate the idea of starting a marriage where something so awful happened? Remy held me close and promised, “That place is bad luck. We’ll never buy a house there, ever.”
And he kept that promise. For five years, even when Southside boomed with new developments—especially those riverside villas that everyone wanted—he refused every time Marissa begged to buy one.
But for Julia, he broke that promise like it was nothing. Just because he knew how much I hated that place, he took a gamble I’d never find out.
The things he promised Julia would last until the end of the world. The things he promised me? He’d drop them in a heartbeat if Julia was involved.
No wonder he agreed to send Julia away so quickly. He’d already made sure she had a backup plan.
No matter what Julia did, Remy always kept a place for her in his heart that nobody else could reach.
No matter how much I gave, no matter how deeply I loved him, I was always on the outside looking in.
