Remy looked so calm and put together, not a hint of emotion slipping through.

If he’d been taking Cindy to Julia, there’s no way I would’ve agreed. But a little girl spending time with her grandma? I couldn’t argue with that.

Honestly, it was better for Cindy to be at the old house anyway. Remy and I could talk about the divorce later without worrying she’d overhear and get upset.

Remy insisted on taking Cindy himself. The two of them left without even stopping for dinner.

I stayed home alone, eating in silence, waiting for him to come back so we could finally talk.

But Remy was gone for ages. I eventually gave up and went to bed, and he still hadn’t returned.

If this had been before, I would’ve called him, asked when he was coming home, whether he wanted a late-night snack. If he said yes, I’d jump right up and make it for him, no questions asked.

Now, all I wanted was to sleep. Tomorrow was going to be a big day.

When I woke up the next morning, Remy was lying behind me.

When did he get back?

His arm was around my waist, his messy hair pressed against the back of my neck. I could feel his breath on my skin, warm and itchy and way too close.

Out of nowhere, I pictured him holding Julia, kissing her the way he used to kiss me.

The same lips, touching two different women. It made me sick to my stomach.

I shoved his arm off, sat up, and rubbed my skin, trying to wipe away the goosebumps.

Remy woke up, blinking, looking confused.

He shook his head, propped himself up on one elbow, and mumbled, “Are you hungry, babe? I’ll get up and grab us some breakfast. Oh, I finally learned how to make red bean soup. I’ll cook it for you later.”

I just stared at my phone. There was a new message from a random account on social media, sent in the middle of the night.
